    Solidarity and support

Standing with our Muslim neighbors in the Bay Area

Nonviolent Citizen Response to threats of violence

    A Rapid Nonviolent Accompaniment Project

    15 December 2015

As the rhetoric of intolerance rises against the Islamic Community in the USA – so does the likelihood of acts of violence towards our Muslim neighbors.

As a project of the non-profit NGO Peaceworkers, based in San Francisco, a group of concerned civilians, experienced in Unarmed Civilian Protection, nonviolent accompaniment and peacekeeping, have come together to offer nonviolent accompaniment and solidarity.

When a Mosque, community center or an individual is encountering intolerance, violence, or the threat of violence – we pledge, when invited, to respond as soon as possible (ideally within 6 hours) to provide moral support, nonviolent witness, solidarity, and, hopefully, protection.

We wish to make ourselves available and known to the leadership of the Islamic Community in the Bay Area and to organize ourselves so that we can respond, when and where invited, to stand in solidarity with threatened members of our greater community.

We will recruit volunteers who have been trained in nonviolent accompaniment and peacekeeping, and will work with integrity, nonviolence, cooperation and respect.

Our support could take many forms:

-Providing helpful presence at critical times of stress.

-To be present at any rallies or gatherings that may be organized against the Muslim Community.

-When invited, to come and be present in a Mosque, community center or residence that has been threatened with violence.

-Organizing “circles of solidarity” in hopes that the Muslim Community may feel more supported and encouraged.

Just don’t be an asshole. Seriously, is it THAT hard? We’re all people, despite religion, appearances, background, etc. We all have the same feelings and needs and if people could simply remember this then it wouldn’t be so difficult to accept others who “appear” to be different, but really aren’t as different as you’d think.

Stand up with eachother but mostly financially, dig deep into our pockets and support organizations that stand up for Muslim rights like CAIR and Muslim legal fund of America. It is not a choice it’s a must.

The other day there was a story about some students in Ill. who wore Hijabs to school, which we posted on Coloradans for Justice in Palestine facebook page. The idea seems to appeal to many with over 60 likes, 27 shares and about 2900 reaches, which is a lot for our page. Perhaps it could become a fashion statement against islamophobe hate mongering and solidarity with a successful campaign.

Stop blaming Islam for any individual stupid act, the same way any other believe have respect so as Islam & if you see facts & figures Israel killed more Palestinian then Muslim kills bomb around the world but USA policies are still in slavery act, they see it but with close eyes, they write but no ink, they listen but with broken ears. Since Israel runs USA war & gas policies 14 years ago they planned really good even an American can’t even talk about it. . So who’s slave, you & you’re desire or me who wants to live in peace..

In Asheville, NC, a local activist contacted the Imam of the Islamic Center to see if they would like people to stand vigil outside when they meet for prayers on Friday afternoons. The Imam accepted our support, and a coalition of members from various organizations, incl other clergy and Veterans for Peace, stood for the first time last Fri. It was very rewarding; after services the members invited us for lunch and tea. The men and women (separately) discussed Islam and learned about one another. I can’t begin to articulate how wonderful it was to engage in honest discussion and learn about each other’s lives—-that we all want the same things—-peace and a better world for our children. We have people committed to stand every Friday, incl Christmas and New Year’s Days, into mid-January and/or as long as the Center’s members feel they want us there. This is a great way to show the Muslim community support and learn about Islam.

Befriend islamophobic people, point out their misunderstanding of the religion and introduce them to Muslims.
