Tuesday, November 16 Capitol Calling Party: From COP26 to the Arctic, Demand Climate Justice!

November 16 CODEPINK Congress: From COP26 to the Arctic, Demand Climate Justice! with Bernadette Demientieff, Neta Crawford, and Jodie Evans

WEBINAR IN PROGRESS: JOIN NOW: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85449481333

Join us this Tuesday, November 16 as we debrief COP26, learn about Indigenous resistance to oil and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and urge our representatives to track and reduce U.S. military emissions.

At COP26, the U.S. promises to halt overseas funding of oil, gas and coal, but what about at home? No such promise! Let's hear the real deal from Neta Crawford and CODEPINK’s Jodie Evans, who joined thousands of climate activists in the streets of Glasgow to demand urgent climate action, including reductions in military greenhouse gas emissions. Pentagon carbon emissions exceed 140 nations!

Reversing the Trump administration, President Biden has suspended oil and gas leases in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWAR),  a 19 million acre reserve in the northeastern corner of Alaska known for its beauty and wildlife. Bernadette Demientieff will talk about why ANWR holds great cultural significance to the Native peoples of the region, including the Gwich’in Nation, who for generations have depended on the migratory caribou herd that births and calves its young in the coastal plain of the refuge.

Special Guests:

Bernadette Demientieff, Executive Director of the Gwich’in Steering Committee, an Indigenous organization formed in 1988 to protect sacred lands in the Arctic Refuge. Demientieff will speak about the threat oil drilling and climate disruption poses to the Gwich'in way of life.

Neta Crawford, Boston University Professor, Co-Founder & Co-Director, Costs of War Project. Crawford will return from Glasgow, Scotland to debrief the COP26 and update us on demands to link militarism with the climate crisis. Crawford is the author of the research paper "Pentagon Fuel Use, Climate Change, and the Costs of War."

Jodie Evans, co-founder of CODEPINK, also back from the COP26, will share her experience organizing on the ground with CODEPINK's Nancy Mancias to highlight the role of the Pentagon as the single largest institutional emitter of greenhouse gases. As Director of Administration in CA Gov. Jerry Brown's first administration, Jodie was an early champion of environmental causes, resulting in breakthroughs in wind and solar technology.

Capitol Calling Party

Join Our Capitol Calling Party to urge our House reps to co-sponsor Congresswoman Barbara Lee's H. Res 767 calling on the Pentagon to track, reduce and report greenhouse gas emissions from all operations, including weapons production, troop deployments and bases.
