A Letter from Nahla Nasser asking you to tell Senator Leahy to stop sending US aid to Egypt.

Dear Activist,
I am a young Egyptian engineer who has never had any political affiliations and was never interested in politics. But I was so proud that the Egyptian people overthrew the Mubarak dictatorship.
Now I am heartbroken by the coup of Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, who came to power through violence and sham elections. This is a regime that kills peaceful protesters, prosecutes journalists (imagine 7-10 year prison sentences for the Al Jazeera journalists!), and has jailed over 20,000 people--both Muslim Brotherhood members and secular activists--for their political beliefs or for violating the repressive anti-protest law.
Do Americans really want $1.5 billion of their tax dollars to go to this brutal regime? Please say no!
In fact, US law prohibits US funds from supporting governments that come to power through military coups. So why is the US breaking its own law by funding Sisi’s regime?
Please tell Senator Leahy, who wrote the law prohibiting aid to coup leaders, that you want this law to be respected. Stop rewarding dictators with more weapons!
I am amazed that despite the risks, the Egyptian people go out into the streets day after day to continue their peaceful protests. I have put my career and personal life on hold to travel the world asking people to educate themselves, expose this regime and stop supporting it. Won't you join us?
Thank you for caring,
Nahla Nasser
PS: A note from CODEPINK: Please join us for one of our summer trainings or in the streets in NYC on September 21, where we'll be marching to stop global climate change and sending the message that "war is not green."
