This Monday, we'll focus on what resisting the occupation of Palestine looks like in the workplace and how labor unions could play a large role in a ceasefire. Community members will hear from labor leader, Kooper Caraway, about why he was asked to step down from his leadership position as the executive director of the SEIU Connecticut State Council and why resisting the occupation within our jobs is important. Learn all about the relationship between the labor movement and the antiwar movement and why we say Genocide Won’t Work on Monday, November 20, at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET.
Monday’s Featured Community Member:
Kooper Caraway, started his work in the labor movement as a Teamsters union warehouse worker, later becoming an organizer with Jobs with Justice. He then served as a Union Rep for the American Federation of Teachers and an Organizer for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in Dallas. In 2017, at 27, he became the youngest CLC President in the nation, leading successful rebuilding efforts for the Sioux Falls AFL-CIO. In September 2020, Caraway, at 29, was elected President of the South Dakota Federation of Labor, setting a national record. In 2022, he became the youngest SEIU State Council Executive Director, cementing his reputation as a pioneering figure in the labor movement. Caraway was forced to resign his position as executive director after speaking in solidarity with the people in Gaza at a rally on Oct. 15th.
