Leqaa Kordia, a 33-year-old Palestinian woman, has been in ICE detention for nearly a year. She is the only remaining student organizer from the Columbia encampment in detention and has been subjected to ruthless conditions. Over the past year, Leqaa has been denied halal meal options, so she has lost a significant amount of weight. There is no regard being given to her religious rights, especially when it comes to her hijab. Her cell is also reportedly infested with snakes and spiders. All Leqaa did was condemn a genocide; now, she’s behind bars with hardly any action being taken for her.
Just a few days ago, Leqaa had disappeared for three days following a seizure from head trauma she endured in the jail bathroom. No one, not her friends or family, knew where she was or what her condition was. Now, she has returned to ICE custody, and her team is saying enough is enough.
