Saudi Arabia's monarchy is convening a conversation among G20 country leaders regarding the Coronavirus pandemic. While we welcome world leaders working together to address the massive COVID-19 cross-border crisis, one of the most important and urgent actions Saudi Arabia can take to address the COVID-19 crisis is to immediately end the war in Yemen, now entering its sixth year. Add your name to the petition to Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the U.S., Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud.

Dear Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud,

Saudi Arabia is convening a conversation among G20 country leaders regarding the Coronavirus pandemic.

While we welcome world leaders working together to address the massive COVID-19 cross-border crisis, one of the most important and urgent actions Saudi Arabia can take to address the COVID-19 crisis is to immediately end the 5-year-old war in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen is so brutal that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, Yemen has been worst humanitarian crisis on earth. Over 85,000 children under the age of five have died since 2015 from acute malnutrition as a result of the war; that’s one child every 10 minutes. Now, with the World Health Organization warning that an explosion of COVID-19 in Yemen is imminent, the county’s crisis stands to get exponentially worse.

The U.S. supported Saudi-led war has left Yemen’s medical infrastructure devastated, with 93% of the country’s medical equipment out of service. The fighting has destroyed half of the nation’s hospitals and clinics. Starting in 2016, an outbreak of cholera affected over 2 million Yemenis, especially children.

Until March 22, 2020, Yemen, Syria, and Libya were the only Arab countries without recorded cases of COVID-19. But on March 22, Syria announced its first case and on March 24, Libya announced its first case. Yemen is sure to be next and so action must be taken immediately for a cease-fire to be reached between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.

The coronavirus pandemic knows no borders. One infected country infects the entire region and the entire world. The Middle East and the world are now witnessing how U.S. sanctions on Iran are preventing that country from being able to adequately address the COVID-19 crisis, causing COVID-19 to spread both within and outside of Iran’s borders. Given the massive number of lives that COVID-19 is likely to take in Yemen, and given that Saudi Arabia is already reeling from COVID-19 — as of March 24, Saudi Arabia was reporting 767 cases and one death — it is imperative that Saudi Arabia end the war in Yemen immediately.

Thank you,
