President Biden: Lift the Venezuela sanctions!

The Biden administration is using the sanctions as leverage, harming ordinary Venezuelans. Tell Biden to lift the sanctions now! Already signed? Share this petition with five friends!

It’s a welcome development that the White House sent an official to meet with the Venezuelan government in Caracas for the first time in over 20 years.

As a result of this meeting, President Maduro announced the resumption of dialogue between the Venezuelan government and opposition. He also released Gustavo Cardenas, a Venezuela-American former Citgo executive, and Jorge Alberto Fernández, a Cuban-American imprisoned for bringing a drone from Colombia to Venezuela.

We call on you to reciprocate these important gestures from the Venezuelan government by taking three steps.

First, lift the cruel and senseless broad-based sanctions that have devastated Venezuela’s economy, forcing millions to flee and causing 40,000 deaths in just their first year.

Second, end the charade of recognizing Juan Guaidó as “interim president.” This was a wild gambit by the Trump administration that should never have been supported by sensible politicians. The fact that your administration sent a team to meet with President Maduro demonstrates de facto recognition of his government. Formalize the recognition by restoring diplomatic relations with Venezuela.

Third, free Alex Saab. Special envoy Roger Carstens has gone to Venezuela twice in the past three months to discuss the fate of Venezuelan-Americans and other U.S. citizens imprisoned in Venezuela. This led to the release of the two people mentioned above. Meanwhile, Alex Saab - a Venezuelan diplomat held in a U.S. prison- has yet to even receive a consular visit. Uphold the Vienna Convention and free Alex Saab!

Venezuela’s economy is growing despite the sanctions, but the improvement is still slow. Here at home, our economy is sputtering and people are facing sticker shock at gas stations. Lifting the sanctions and improving relations with Venezuela will help people in both of our countries.

Sincerely,

Sinceramente,

Will you sign?

I do not believe for one moment that our capricious enactments of sanctions on the populations of “select” countries (who you charge with a failure to “obey” your orders) serve the interests of anyone in our own country except perhaps for the huge multinational companies and too big to fail banks who think they’re entitled to profit from unfairly exploiting the natural resources of other weak countries around the world. It is unconscionable to exact your pound of flesh from countries who don’t “obey” your notions of how they should run their own lives.

You don’t give a shit about democracy – if you did you’d stop these debilitating attacks on their people. If there was a moral International court you’d be charged with extortion and crimes against humanity IMO.

    STOP IT!

Our foreign policy does not serve the vast majority of people in our own country, IMO. And it wreaks havoc everywhere else.

    You’re not exceptional.

I wish you were and considered the consequences of your actions on millions of people.
