The U.S., which played a major role in exacerbating the conflict that led up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, must now play a major role in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to achieve a ceasefire. Add your name to the following letter to President Biden and Congress asking for the U.S. to support and commit to necessary compromises such as recognizing Ukraine as a neutral country and not expanding NATO any further eastward.

Dear President Biden,

Stop the War in Ukraine.

Negotiations, not Arms Shipments.

Don’t Risk Nuclear War.

We strongly condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where over two million civilians have fled the country and remaining residents live in fear, seeking refuge in underground subways and bomb shelters.

We call for:

  • an immediate ceasefire
  • negotiations without preconditions, including the U.S., Russia, NATO and Ukraine
  • no U.S. arms shipments to Ukraine
  • prevent escalation of the conflict. Don’t risk nuclear war.
  • an end to NATO expansion

We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people under vicious attack and with the thousands of courageous Russian anti-war activists risking arrest and imprisonment as they protest in cities throughout Russia.

We also recognize that NATO has played a major role in exacerbating this conflict, facilitating a 2014 coup to overthrow the democratically elected leader of Ukraine and breaking promises not to expand NATO into Eastern Europe, where offensive missiles in Romania and Poland could reach Russia in minutes.

We reject the imposition of massive sanctions that are harming the Russian people who, like us, want peace and security. Blanket sanctions on the entire Russian economy are spreading economic and environmental hardship to Europe and the global community with energy price hikes that may reduce energy consumption in the short term but prompt more oil drilling and lethal burning of fossil fuels in the long term.

While we are gratified at the massive humanitarian assistance and safe refuge being offered to Ukrainians, we urge our governments to stop the flow of weapons to Ukraine and to reject the call for a No-Fly Zone. These will only exacerbate the crisis and can lead to a much wider war—even a nuclear confrontation with apocalyptic consequences.

No to War in Ukraine; Yes to Negotiations and Peace.

Sincerely,

Will you sign?
