Don’t Artwash Saudi Crimes!

Saudi Arabia’s Winter at Tantora Festival is an eight-week long event held in the historic northwestern Saudi town of Al-Ula that serves to distract from Saudi’s war crimes and human rights abuses. The 2019-2020 season — December 20 through February 9 — includes Enrique Iglesias, Lionel Richie, and Rod Stewart. In addition to musical performances, the festival will include horse racing, hot-air ballooning, and other artwashing events. We are delighted to share news that Rod Stewart has already canceled his performance thanks to your pressure!

Saudi Arabia is still stuck living in the 12th Century.
Avoid Saudi Arabia like the plague and do your gigs
in progressive places that are in the 21st Century.

Performing in Saudi Arabia questions your real commitment to children in Yemen. Do not perform for the Saudis. They need to feel the world’s horror at what they are doing and the genocide they are perpetrating on these Yemeni children. Your commitment will be judged by your actions.

Saudi Arabia is an evil violent and greedy autocracy that tolerates no dissent within it’s borders, it imprisons, violates and murders independently minded women, generally treats women as slaves created for the convenience and entertainment of men. Furthermore it bombs schools, hospitals and other targets in neighbouring Yemen, thus murdering and maiming scores of children, women and men. It savagely enjoys throwing non-heterosexuals from tall buildings, while decapitating with the sword others that do not comply with its theocratic order. Given the forgoing crimes it is almost trivial to mention its attitude to journalistic criticism as exemplified by its murder and dismemberment of Jamal Kashogi in its embassy in Turkey. This sick, sick, sick government does not deserve to be tolerated, entertained and implicitly normalized by any right thinking artists or musicians.

Saudi Arabia is a brutal Country that beheads dissidents and oppresses women. They are currently waging a genocidal war in Yemen which is causing the starvation of thousands of women and children. It is a brutal regime which should be shunned by all. Please do not support them with your art. They also want the US to go to war with Iran at their behest. It will not be Saudi soldiers who die in this war but Americans and their allies. Please do not go.

Use your art to awaken the world to the human rights abuses and crimes against humanity being perpetrated today by Saudi Arabia. Please do not allow Saudi Arabian government to use you to promote the myth of acceptability for its behavior among the nations.

Please don’t dignify a murderous regime whose war crimes kill a child in Yemen every 10 minutes, according to UNICEF. The Saudi dictatorship also holds regular public executions where they literally chop off people’s (including women’s) heads for thought crimes like “blasphemy” and “witchcraft.” This cruel and murderous family will never stop massacring their own people and their neighbors as long as role models like you treat Saudi Arabia as a normal country like any other.

Art leads, informs, educates, heals — artists must NOT support totalitarian regimes, discriminatory governments, those who kill journalists, stone women, support honor killings of young girls and so forth. I am appalled that Rod Stewart and Lionel Richie would stoop to such lows — as they are from my generation who had high hopes for humanity. NO to performance in Saudi Arabia.
