Stop Supporting Saudi Arabia and Other Persian Gulf Tyrannies

According to Time magazine (April 24,  2011) the U.S. has spent over $8 trillion on military forces in the Persian Gulf in the last four decades, supposedly protecting the Gulf from the Soviet Union and then Iran. The effect has been to give backing to absolute monarchies opposed to religious freedom, female equality and decent treatment of workers. These hereditary despots are infamous for inflicting beheadings and floggings on those calling for human rights.

Our government made no objection when Saudi tanks entered Bahrain and helped its Sunni ruler suppress the democratic movement for Shia rights. In Yemen the U.S. helps coordinate the Saudi bombing campaign that has killed thousands of civilians. These policies have spurred tremendous anger against our country.

Stop wasting taxpayers' money defending injustice! Close the U.S. bases in Kuwait, Bahrain and the Emirates. Bring our soldiers and sailors home NOW.

Petition:
Dear President Obama and the US Congress:

The U.S. has spent trillions on military forces in the Persian Gulf. Washington supports tyrannical regimes, wars and cruel occupations without making us safe. Close the U.S. bases and bring the fleet home NOW.

Not only does Saudi Arabia brutally suppress its citizens (particularly those who advocate for human rights reform like Sheikh Nimr), but they also financially and ideologically support terrorist groups around the world. Let’s not forget 9/11.

Time for the US to stop aiding and abetting a brutal, undemocratic and ruthless regime – Saudi Arabia.

Where are the sane, compassionate leaders? Are there none? Our relationship to Saudi Arabia is a travesty. I’ve spent time in La Côte d’Ivoire and am deeply worried as increasingly violent, heavily-armed terrorists are at loose in that country. I know where those guns are coming from—where that training is coming from. I’m afraid for my Muslim hosts and for the friends I made while there. We have no business funding this fear, mayhem and violence.

If you are serious about human rights, which is doubtful, then you need to stop supporting regimes that are cruel and heartless. Our foreign policy is putrid, only surpassed by the jingoistic tripe you keep trying to foist on your citizens as news and compassion. We don’t treat our own citizens (of color) any better so stop with the platitudes. Call our government what it is, an oligarchy, and be done with it or own up to your promises and make some changes outside the election cycles, in real time.

Remember, at the root of this, aside from the grander and more horrific delusions of religion, is resources. The WORLD does not need to burn more oil. Burning Hydrocarbons = EXTINCTION. It’s a larger view of the calculus—though I feel confident humans are far too stupid to do anything that would affect perceptions of wealth and power. Which is really at the end of the day why you’re condemning your children to horror and death.
