President Obama,

Seven years ago, you said on national television that you were going to close Guantanamo. Seven years later, the world is still waiting. Over its history since the first prisoners arrived on January 11, 2002, Guantanamo has imprisoned 779 detainees, most of whom were held without charge or trial. As of November 2015, 107 detainees remain imprisoned at Guantanamo. The prison camp is not only an outrageous violation of the rights of the hundreds who have been held there, it is a blight on the history of the United States.

We, the undersigned, call on President Obama to visit Guantanamo Bay and use his executive powers to close the prison (and return the navy base to the people of Cuba!).

In closing Guantanamo, it is not acceptable to those signing this petition that any prisoners be transferred. In fact, all black sites should be closed.

How is closing Guantanamo not an integral part of opening relations with Cuba and moving toward diplomatic solutions for global problems? You will never put an end to the outrage Guantanamo has inflicted, but you can at least arrest its continuing resonance.

Guantanamo Bay prison is an international disgrace. Close it. Return the area to Cuba. And please do not replace this prison with another of its kind.

One of the greatest evils of the “Dark Ages” was the torture imposed upon humans and animals. It is absolutely grotesque that our country continues such practices. There is no reason EVER for torture. In fact, not allowing torture of any sort in our country would be a far greater assurance of our well-being and safety than the abuse carried out at Guantanamo.
