Dear Congress
While everyday workers are struggling to survive, the Pentagon is requesting “billions and billions” more in funding in the next COVID-19 relief package. This is an outrage--the Pentagon has already received an additional $10 billion in funding in the first COVID-19 relief package on top of their egregious $740 billion annual budget for 2020. We cannot afford to give one more penny to the Pentagon. Instead, we must bail out the 26 million people who have lost their jobs so far, the 9.2 million who have lost their health insurance, and the countless more who will have to choose between paying for rent and groceries.
The next COVID-19 relief package must prioritize funding to address our real threat to peace and security: COVID-19. In the face of a global pandemic, we need to fund healthcare, not the production of weapons that will only exacerbate the worst effects of this ongoing global pandemic.
Working people in America are fed up with a government that prioritizes funding for weapons of war above their well-being.
I endorse the following principles for all future COVID-19 relief and recovery legislation and ask that you do too:
- Health is the top priority, for all people, with no exceptions
- Economic relief must be provided directly to the people
- Rescue workers and communities, not corporate executives
- Make a downpayment on a regenerative economy while preventing future crises
- Protect our democratic process while protecting each other
