Hands off Chelsea

On International Women’s Day, Chelsea Manning was wrongfully jailed for refusing to participate in a secret WikiLeaks Grand Jury investigation. While in jail she was served with a second subpoena. After being released, Chelsea Manning was wrongfully jailed a second time for again refusing to testify in front of a WikiLeaks Grand Jury. The U.S. government’s continued imprisonment of Chelsea Manning is nothing more than full-scale harassment.

We urge the U.S. Attorney for the East District of Virginia G. Zachary Terwilliger to show compassion and grant a medical release of our sister Chelsea Manning.

Chelsea is a trans woman who has suffered harsh treatment during her detention in Quantico. She was held in solitary confinement, stripped of her garments, and tortured. While in federal prison, she attempted suicide more than once. She was dishonorably discharged from the Army; and had already served 1,294 days in prison when she was sentenced in August 2013 to 35 years confinement with the possibility of parole in 8 years. She was convicted in July 2013 for a series of offenses including violations of the Espionage Act, after leaking more than 700,000 classified files of diplomatic cables and other documents to Wikileaks widely known as “Cablegate.” Included in these were videos of the massacre of civilians in both the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Manning has testified repeatedly on the issue. With our support, we generated a massive outcry, influencing President Obama to use his last days in office to do the right thing and commute her sentence.

We are urging U.S. Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger to do the right thing and grant Chelsea a medical release from jail.

The time to encourage Chelsea to testify against others was before she was sentenced. Now you have nothing to offer and she has no reason to cooperate with a government that tossed her away for bringing light to the extrajudicial killings by our government.

Geir Kristian Dalheim. Pride when it comes to the military should be earned. Collateral damage was about mass murder soldiers who laughed while killing children. Soldiers laughing while they killed many people. I think this case is important. There is a contrast between soldiers from 2 world war and these garbage soldiers. No pride and no honer. They live today with respect from the U.s society. I met a Marine that was 75 years old over in the states. The best person I have ever met. He was against this video: collateral damage. Chelsea Manning have more in common with the Marines from world war 2 than these soldiers without honer. She is put in prison for pointing out the same thing as my 75 year old Marine was totally against.

Chelsea Manning, like Edward Snowden and Julian Assange, is a true hero who deserves admiration and gratitude for her great service to all who oppose the horrors of the military-industrial complex.

Continuing to harass and torture Chelsea Manning (along with seeking extradition of Julian Assange for publishing facts) only shows further the debasement of US imperialism and its war crimes. Climb out of this gutter and do the right thing. Free Chelsea Manning.

We need to protect our first amendment rights and the journalists and whistle blowers. We are living in a time with an unmoral occupant in the White House that is perpetuating hate, divisiveness and terrorist attacks on our own soil. This is a fight for our lives and we must do whatever necessary to protect our democracy and take back our government from the corporate coup and corrupt politicians!
