Dear President Biden,

At the beginning of his presidency, former President Trump signed an Executive Order to keep the military prison at Guantánamo Bay open. Since then, no new detainees have come in, and only one has been transferred out.

President Biden, you have an opportunity to roll back this harmful policy and close the detention center once and for all. The detention facility at Guantánamo continues to hold 40 Muslim men indefinitely, most without charge, and many of whom were tortured by the US government. None has received a fair trial. The treatment and imprisonment in Guantánamo are glaring human rights violations that the Biden administration must end now.

Toffiq al-Bihani is one of five detainees at Guantanamo who have been cleared for transfer to other countries for many years, yet remain imprisoned indefinitely. He was tortured by the CIA before he was sent to Guantánamo in 2003, where he remains without charge or trial. He was cleared for transfer in 2010.

The Guantánamo Bay detention facility should be shut down once and for all! At CODEPINK we feel it should become an international Center for Peace as a healing for the violence and inhumanity our tax dollars have supported for over 19 years.
