U.S. Out of Africa

CODEPINK unequivocally condemns U.S. imperialism and militarist violence across the globe. Nowhere is this more evident than on the African continent, where centuries of colonial plunder have been carried forward under the banner of “development,” “security,” and “partnership.” From France and the U.K. to the United States, powerful nations have stolen land, extracted resources, and undermined African self-determination in service of capitalist profit and global domination. The U.S., in particular, has waged economic, political, and military campaigns that prioritize oil, minerals, and strategic control over the rights, dignity, and futures of African continent and its diaspora. This violent legacy continues today through military bases, proxy wars, and climate destruction—all sustained at the expense of the continent’s sovereignty and the planet’s survival. According to the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, "the United States has twenty-nine known military facilities in fifteen countries on the continent, while France has bases in ten countries. No other country from outside the continent has as many military bases in Africa." These U.S. bases are managed by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).

CODEPINK is a proud endorser of the Black Alliance for Peace’s U.S. Out of Africa! Shut Down AFRICOM and Zone of Peace campaigns—bold, grassroots initiatives demanding an end to U.S. military occupation in Africa and U.S. intervention in Latin America and the Caribbean. We are also a founding member of the Coalition Against U.S. Foreign Military Bases, uniting voices across movements to dismantle the global infrastructure of war.
