Tell Biden to stop blocking $450 million in COVID-19 aid to the Afghan people

In the midst of a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, with over three million Afghan internal refugees in dire need of food, shelter, clean water, and medical care, and coping with a third wave of COVID-19, the Biden administration has pressured the International Monetary Fund not to release $450 million in funds that were supposed to arrive in Afghanistan this week to help the country deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Sign the petition demanding that Biden stop blocking COVID-19 aid to Afghanistan. You can also call the WHite House comment line at 202-456-1111.

Dear President Biden,

We thank you for ending the U.S.’s longest war. The 20-year-long war in Afghanistan cost the American people $2.26 trillion and has accomplished nothing but death and destruction. According to the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, there are over three million Afghan internal refugees in dire need of food, shelter, clean water, and medical care. Rather than the U.S. funding the UNHCR’s urgent appeal for $350 million, which the U.S. should do, you have pressured the International Monetary Fund to withhold $450 million in funds designated to help Afghanistan deal with the coronavirus pandemic which is raging in the country. You have also frozen nearly all of the Afghan Central Bank’s $9.4 billion in foreign currency reserves, depriving the new government of funds that it will desperately need in the coming months to feed its people and provide basic services.

As people concerned with the health and well-being of the Afghan people, and as people calling for U.S. accountability for the terrible wounds and trauma the U.S. inflicted on the Afghan people over the past 20 years, we call on you to immediately stop pressuring the IMF not to release COVID-19 aid to Afghanistan. You should also unfreeze the $9.4 billion, fully fund the UN’s 2021 appeal for emergency aid, which as of late August was less than 40% funded, and shift the $6 billion allocated for the now-defunct Afghan armed forces to humanitarian aid, instead of diverting it to other forms of wasteful military spending.

Sincerely,

The Afghan people are in dire need of Medical help, clean water, healthy food, a functioning public health apparatus, safety and restoration of civil society delivering services to the citizens and volunteers.

More troops is counter-productive. Freezing nearly all of the $9.4 billion, is not only counter productive. Rather that action is totally cruel, inhumane and mean-spirited. Heavens!!! Has America stooped that low? Is there that much of a deficit in the senior ranks of the US government? Where is the compassion for the suffering human beings? Where is the sorrow for starving children, bewildered by the bombings, lost in the devastation of their home and the worst… lost from their mother, father, siblings and the rest of the extended family.

Let us stop and seriously imagine HOW IT MUST BE LIVING IN THE MIDST OF UTTER DEVASTATION!! Then, maybe, just maybe, we will think of our own children in the midst of that kind of horror. Let that image remain in our mind because that IMAGE will guide us to make most if not all the appropriate choices to demonstrate our deep compassion and love for the suffering Afghan people. For all of us are the children of the Almighty.

Please also STOP aristriking Afghanistan and the Middle East. “We will hunt you down and kill you” is NOT the attitude that makes peace.
