In our very small town in rural Kentucky, I am making a new effort to not identify anyone as Muslim. I, too, am afraid for their safety. Most of them pass in their professional roles (mostly doctors) and no one mentions their religion.

While living in Paris, I immersed myself in Middle Eastern music, dance and visual arts. Promoting them broadens understanding of Arab culture beyond discussions of politics and religion. The arts present fertile ground for lasting friendships — a vital component of solidarity as Ms. Maarouf astutely suggests.

Sports are often a way for people to mix and get to know one another. USers are learning to play what the rest of the world calls Futball for instance or softball.

But the teams should have to be racially and religiously mixed. So that your team mates do not look like you.

As in everybody shows up and then we pick teams so that people who do not necessarily know each other are on the same team. It is something that men or women can play or there are plenty of other games that people can think of especially with the olympics coming up. Those of us who are no longer sufficiently athletic can still help out and

    work on the picnic.

Ask local mosques how best to help. Hold counter-demonstrations whenever and wherever Islamophobic demonstrations take place. Participate in vigils, marches, demos, etc. to speak out against Islamophobia and show solidarity with Muslim Americans.

Confront ignorant remarks. Provide positive friendly support and information. Create opportunities for inter cultural interaction on a personal basis. Reach out and invite.
