Don’t Let Israel Drag the U.S. Into A War With Iran

On Thursday, July 3, 2020, Israel exploded a massive bomb at the Iranian Natanz nuclear site, severely damaging a building. It doesn’t get more dangerous than this and we have to act fast to prevent Israel from starting and dragging the U.S. into another disastrous Middle East war. Send a message right now to your Senators urging them to support and vote for Tom Udall’s amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to invoke the War Powers Act so that Trump may not engage in military conflict with Iran without congressional approval. STOP THE NEXT WAR NOW! On Wednesday, July 8th at 1:00 PM ET (10 AM Pacific) CODEPINK will be hosting a webinar with Sina Toossi of the National Iranian-American Council to discuss the situation between Israel, Iran, and the U.S. RSVP here to join the discussion.

Dear Senate:

I am writing to you, as your constituent, to urge you to support and vote for Senator Tom Udall’s amendment to the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to prohibit any war with Iran that is not authorized by Congress.

A bipartisan majority of the Senate supported Udall’s similar amendment to the 2020 NDAA last year, but it did not clear the 60-vote threshold to advance instituted by the Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. In March of this year, Congress sent a bipartisan Iran War Powers Resolution — preventing any unauthorized war against Iran — to President Trump for signature, but the president vetoed the bipartisan bill.

On Thursday, July 3, 2020, a massive explosion occurred at the Iranian Natanz nuclear site about 200 miles outside of Tehran. A Middle Eastern intelligence official told the New York Times that Israel was behind the attack, and Israel has not denied it. The attack severely damaged a building and set the stage for Iranian retaliation and massive escalation between Iran and Israel, and then the U.S.

The explosion at the Natanz nuclear facility was the third incident of its kind in Iran in a week, including a major explosion reported near the Iranian Parchin military site in northeast Tehran and an explosion at a Tehran clinic, taking19 lives.

It doesn’t get more dangerous than this. We have to act fast to prevent Israel from starting and dragging the U.S. into another disastrous Middle East war.

The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the sole authority to declare war and we must affirm this. As Senator Udall said in his July 1, 2020 press release:

“If we think for a minute that the Trump administration isn’t ready and willing to go to war, think again. Just yesterday, the Trump administration’s Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, affirmed in no uncertain terms that, ‘The military option is always on the table,’ to stop any Iranian nuclear program. With this kind of continuing saber-rattling, we must send a clear message to the president and his administration that initiating war against Iran is beyond the powers this president or any president holds.” We hope you agree with the Senator and support this amendment.

Sincerely,

Will you sign?
