Tuesday, September 6 Capitol Calling Party

Tuesday, September 6 Capitol Calling Party

On Tuesday, September 6, join CODEPINK Congress and Massachusetts Peace Action to discuss Biden's continuation of Trump-era policies that persecute Cuba and their implications.

While President Biden fist-bumps with Saudi autocrats, he continues Trump’s persecution of Cuba, an island nation with a proud revolutionary history. Despite a slight easing of some Trump-imposed restrictions, the White House refuses to lift most of the sanctions, end the blockade or remove Cuba from a state sponsor of terrorism list. Cuba does not sponsor terror; it sponsors global healthcare by sending doctors and nurses all over the world and excelling at medical innovation at home.

Trump’s main justification for putting Cuba on the terrorist list was because Cuba has given asylum to some of the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels from Colombia, but Cuba did that as part of a peace process that was supported internationally. Moreover, the new president of Colombia has asked Cuba to once again mediate negotiations with the ELN, and has publicly asked Biden to take Cuba off the infamous list.

Biden’s refusal to take Cuba off the terror list means that it’s difficult for Cuba to engage in international trade or obtain loans to meet urgent needs, such as providing environmental remediation and medical support to victims of the recent devastating oil tanker fire in the Matanzas region.

Join CODEPINK Congress as we delve into the politics behind Biden’s reactionary Cuba policies and demand Biden remove Cuba from the terror list.
