Protesting Obama's Miniscule "Drawdown" from Afghanistan

June 23, 2011

Janet Weil's report back:

Following Obama's announcement of a small "drawdown" of 10,000 US troops by end of 2011, a mere 5% of the total US troops and military contractors in Afghanistan, Kirsten Moller of Global Exchange and I organized a protest at the New Federal Building. Our signs read: Bring ALL the Troops Home/Bring Our War $ Home/Obama Is Deaf: Honk if You Want Troops Home.

Leslie and Martha came with the huge, dramatic pink letters on black sign that reads PEACE on one side, IMPEACH on the other. We showed the PEACE side to the traffic pouring down 7th Street, but maybe it's time to show IMPEACH since Obama is going against the constitution every day now with an illegal bombing campaign against Libya?

Shirley Golub, who ran for Pelosi's district in 2008, and I had an interesting conversation with a taxi driver who thought I was flagging him down with my peace sign, and stayed to hear what we were protesting, and took a flyer.

We were invited to the long-standing vigil at the Old Federal Building, which started in response to the US bombing of Afghanistan in October 2001. Sharon, Kirsten and I took our signs and "Women Say No to War" banner a few blocks and joined the 9 years and counting vigil there for a bit.

Back "home" at the Women's Building, Rae took a photo of me and Sharon, rocking our respective pink looks.
