Obama: Update Your War Status

April 20th, three Bay Area CODEPINKers trekked to Palo Alto outside of the Facebook headquarters where President Obama was scheduled to speak at a Town Hall meeting with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Obama's less than 24 hour visit to the Bay featured 4 stops; the Facebook Townhall meeting, a $38,500 plate fundraising event, a speaking event at the Moscone Center, and another fundraising brunch. His first engagement, the "Shared Responsibility and Shared Prosperity" Townhall Meeting at Facebook, lured hundreds of people to the streets of Palo Alto, hoping to catch a glimpse of the President and send him a message of sorts.

CODEPINKers Nancy Mancias, Sharon Miller and Chelsea Byers were amongst the first to "check in" at the Facebook headquarters. Reporters were buzzing around, unable to get into the event just yet and with nothing left to do except interviews. As a result, a good handful of reports featured CODEPINK at the protest, aiding in projecting our messaging.

Using the coined Facebook jargon, the three PINK protestors held signs that said "Edit Your Budget Profile", "Close Guantanao: CODEPINK Likes This" and the popular "Obama: Update Your War Status".

After three hours of hanging out in the median of Paper Mill Road, walking around the intersection with signs in hand, and avoiding the heckles of Tea Party protestors who tried to "align" with our protest, we saw Obama zip by (in his tax-funded motorcade), hopefully catching a glimpse of the PINK banners and reading the message.

The President has yet to update his war status.
