Ann Wright: "America's Pivot to Asia: Destabilizing the Region; Recent Travels in Northeast Asia"

"America's Pivot to Asia" refers to “American military exercises and deployment of strategic military equipment in Asia and the Pacific has increased substantially as the war on Iraq ended and the war on Afghanistan winds down.” This trend includes U.S. pressure on Japan to abandon its remarkable “No War” Constitutional Article 9, to allow the U.S. to fly long-range Global Hawk spy drones from a base in Japan, and the building of a U.S. military base on Jeju Island in South Korea, destroying the livelihoods and environment on that UNESCO heritage site. Colonel Wright will speak about her recent trip to Northeast Asia, Jeju Island, South Korea, and eight days on the PEACE BOAT traveling to South Korea, Taiwan, Shanghai and Nanjing, China. Peace Boat is a Japan-based international non-governmental and non-profit organization that works to promote peace, human rights, equal and sustainable development and respect for the environment.

Colonel Wright is a nationally known peace and justice activist, writer and organizer, as well as a fabulous speaker. Her talks are lively, understandable and energizing.  She served nearly three decades as an officer in the US military before becoming a diplomat for the State Department, serving in U.S. Embassies in Nicaragua, Grenada, Somalia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Afghanistan and Mongolia.  In 2003, Colonel Wright resigned from the U.S. Army in protest of the U.S. war against Iraq. Wright was a passenger on the Challenger 1, which along with the Mavi Marmara, was part of the Gaza flotilla. She will be part of a global presence in Palestine's Gaza Strip for International Women's Day 2014.   Col. Wright has been engaged in drone resistance in Pakistan , Afghanistan ,Yemen, and Gaza. In 2013, she spoke on U.S. foreign policy issues in Turkey , Egypt, Ireland, Belgium, China, Japan and Korea.
