Honor Dr. King's memory.
January 15, 2015
Dear Activist,
"Our scientific power has out-run our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men."
~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "Strength of Love"
Even as he sat in an Albany, Georgia, jail cell some 52 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. understood that "Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows." But today, the US continues to promote violence at home and abroad. We have become all too familiar, even within our own communities, with heavily militarized police departments armed with weapons designed for the battlefield.
Today, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, through Monday, the holiday in his honor, join the movement to demilitarize our communities and to #ReclaimMLK: Take the pledge to resist the “triple evils” of poverty, racism, and militarism that Dr. King warned us against.
Dr. King's tools were non-violent civil disobedience and direct action. The movement he championed was radical, principled and uncompromising. Join CODEPINK, Black Lives Matter, Venceremos Brigade and many more to plan or join actions in your local community.
Until our communities are free of militarized police, our justice system works for all and not just the privileged, US-backed apartheid violence and oppression has ended, and we are truly free, MLK weekend should be memorialized as a time of national resistance to injustice.
Take the pledge to resist and #ReclaimMLK.
