Our Vanishing Civil Liberties: Panel Discussion on NDAA and more
Tuesday, July 31st 2012  7 PM
Oakland, CA

Join CODEPINK organizer Nancy Mancias; Shahid Buttar of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee;
Lee Tien, Senior Staff Attorney, Electronic Frontier Foundation; Deborah Small, Break the Chains; Robert Meola, Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission; and Mike Flynn, National Lawyers Guild and Safe San Francisco, for a lively panel discussion of attacks on our civil liberties and what we can do to take action and reclaim them.

Background: Last New Year's Eve, President Obama signed the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) for 2012. Through this law: the government can label you a terrorist, arrest you without charges, and hold you without trial, merely on suspicion of association with terrorist groups. The language in that part of the NDAA is so vague that it can be applied to anyone. The armed forces can detain you indefinitely, whether or not you are a US citizen. You can be denied the right to a lawyer and due process. You can be sent away to a foreign country, where you may be imprisoned and/or tortured with no legal recourse.

The 2013 NDAA is being debated in Congress this summer.
