War Criminals

CODEPINK is modeling citizen justice (with a splash of pink) by holding the former Bush administration, Obama administration and others accountable for leading us into unjust and illegal military interventions. We know that change will not occur unless citizens stand up for their rights under the law.

Whistleblowers

Transparency is critical in a democracy and CODEPINK has been a leading voice supporting those speaking truth to power. We attended the trial and verdict of brave whistleblower Chelsea Manning, and set up the CODEPINK Chelsea Manning Support Network to support her during her incarceration. We also protested NSA mass surveillance and supported whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Whistleblowers

CODEPINK calls for JUSTICE for incarcerated and exiled whistleblowers who have exposed the truth. Whether it's releasing the Iraq war logs or secret documents on NSA domestic spying, the whistle-blowers seeking corporate and government transparency have endured severe consequences. CODEPINK celebrates the courage of imprisoned transwoman Chelsea Manning and whistleblowers Edward Snowden, Jeffery Sterling, and Jeremy Hammond.

-Write a Whistleblower! Host a letter-writing potluck, picnic or party to recognize a whistleblower and celebrate truth and justice on their behalf . It’s an unfortunate reality that today whistleblowers seeking justice are incarcerated, exiled or pushed to suicide. The burdens this places on our social system and affected families are both financial and emotional. The damages this causes affects our society and our communities. Find out how to write a letter to Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden, Jeffrey Sterling or Jeremy Hammond below in the Resources section. Here are additional political prisoners to contact.

Chelsea Elizabeth Manning, born Bradley Edward Manning, was a U.S soldier convicted in July 2013 for a series of offenses including violations of the Espionage Act, after leaking more than 700,000 classified files of diplomatic cables and other documents to Wikileaks widely known as “Cablegate”. Included in these were videos of the massacre of civilians in both Afghan and Iraq wars. Dishonorably discharged from the Army, Manning had already served 1,294 days in prison when she was sentenced in August 2013 to 35 years confinement with the possibility of parole in 8 years. Manning is a transgender woman and had suffered excessively harsh treatment during her detention in Quantico. After sentencing she said in a statement, "I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female...” Follow Chelsea on Twitter: https://twitter.com/xychelsea

Edward Joseph Snowden, is a former CIA employee and National Security Administration contractor and computer specialist who leaked classified NSA documents in mid- 2013 to several media outlets including the Guardian, thus initiating the NSA Leaks. Snowden’s release of classified material has been referred to as the most significant leak in US history. According to Snowden, his “sole motive” for leaking NSA documents was “to inform the public to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them.” U.S. authorities have charged Snowden with espionage and theft of government property. He currently resides in an undisclosed location in Russia where he has temporary asylum. Follow Edward on Twitter: https://twitter.com/snowden

Jeremy Hammond, is a political activist and computer “hacktivist” with the group Anonymous. A believer in “electronic civil disobedience” as a means of fighting for social justice…” On November 15th, 2013 Hammond was sentenced to 10 years in prison for computer crimes, most notably the break-in of the systems of the U.S government intelligence contractor, Strategic Forecasting, better known as Stratfor, for leaking millions of its internal e-mails to WikiLeaks. This leak revealed, among other things, surveillance of political groups in the U.S and abroad, from Occupy Wall Street, to activists in Bhopal, India.

Stage a Citizens Arrest

Pick a war criminal:

Pick an event:

  • Check out our War Criminal Event Calendar or look for appearances by any war criminals in your area.
  • Plan your strategy. Will you be attending the event inside or staying outside with banners and signs? Will you be doing a symbolic citizen's arrest? Depending on the circumstances, purchase or reserve a ticket, buy a book, stand in line or otherwise peacefully enter the proceedings. Discern whether your bag will be searched by security at the event. If so, handily slip your handcuffs and other arrest materials into your sleeves, your pockets, your pants or any other inconspicuous areas. Choose your seat carefully and observe the general "feel" of the crowd.
  • Rise from your seat and say loudly “(e.g. DICK CHENEY) You are under arrest for war crimes!” Be prepared with a short line to say over and over. Unfurl a banner if you have one. Hold up your handcuffs and your citizen’s arrest complaint. Note: Do NOT actually place the handcuffs on the war criminal’s wrist or touch the criminal. Making physical contact with a war criminal may be construed as assault by the police; handcuffs are only for use as a prop. Only an on-duty police officer has the right to actually cuff the War Criminal in a citizen’s arrest. Your arrest complaint is your power.
  • After your action, immediately get the story out by calling reporters, writing a blog, posting your video and/or photos, and emailing us.

Pick accessories:

  • Hand-cuffs (only for use as a prop).
  • Banners: Keep the messaging simple. "Arrest (war criminal's name here)" and "War Criminal!"
  • Arrest Complaint (to hold as a visual and read to the war criminal present). Examples that you can modify: Rove and Chevron lawyer William Haynes.
  • Camera and/or Video Camera + someone on your team in charge of documenting the action.

Obama: Don’t Let Him Get Away With War Crimes!

Since President Barack Obama’s inauguration, CODEPINK continues to model citizen justice by holding elected officials accountable for leading us into unjust and illegal military interventions and waging a drone war that has killed innocent civilians. We know that change will not occur unless citizens stand up (with a splash of pink) for peace, justice and accountability! Learn how we are holding the Obama administration's feet to the fire!

Afghanistan
In 2009, CODEPINK co-hosted Malalai Joya on a speaking tour throughout the US. Joya served as a Parliamentarian in the National Assembly of Afghanistan from 2005 until early 2007, after being dismissed for publicly denouncing the presence of warlords and war criminals in the Afghan Parliament.

CODEPINK co-founder Jodie Evans hand delivered a petition to President Barack Obama signed by Afghani women who want an end to the war in their country. Evans collected signatures of Afghani women during a trip to Afghanistan on a petition that asked for a role in the peace process and demanding that the US abandon plans to send in additional troops. (

In 2011, CODEPINK introduced to members of the US Conference of Mayors an anti-war resolution, calling on Congress to redirect military spending to domestic priorities. The resolution successfully passed at the conference in June 2011.

CODEPINK has included the use of drones in Afghanistan in all its drone work. This includes educational work, global outreach (especially Germany and UK involvement)  and participation in protests at Creech and Hancock Air Force Bases. CODEPINK has engaged in educational work and lobbying in Congress to stop Obama's surge and bring troops home, and raised funds for the Afghan duvet project of Voices for Creative Nonviolence.

Drones (Pakistan, Yemen)
Drones have become the signature weapons of the Obama administration's air strikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan Yemen and Somalia. Drones scout over the countries launching Hellfire missiles into the region missing their intended targets, resulting in the deaths of many innocent people including children.

CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin launched a new groundbreaking book "Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control." In the book, Benjamin writes about the menace posed by the proliferation of drones for killing abroad and spying here at home. The United States is the number one user of drones, but now over 50 countries have them, leading us into a world of chaos and lawlessness. Learn more about the book!

CODEPINK brought together human rights advocates, robotics technology experts, lawyers, journalists and activists for two separate summits in Washington DC to inform the American public about the widespread and rapidly expanding deployment of both lethal and surveillance drones, including drone use in the United States. Participants had the opportunity to listen to the personal stories of Pakistani and Yemeni drone-strike victims and families.

In 2012, CODEPINK traveled to Pakistan to protest US drone strikes that have killed more innocent people than militants. The 40-member delegation meet with the families of drone victims, lawyers, academics, Pakistani politicians and U.S, officials in order to promote peaceful relations between U.S. and Pakistan.

In 2013, CODEPINK organized a delegation that traveled to Yemen to meet with victims of US drone strikes and family members of Yemeni Guantanamo prisoners cleared for release. Yemen is the country with the most Guantanamo prisoners (86 of the 166 prisoners) and the most US drone strikes. Delegates called for relations between the US and Yemen to be based on diplomacy and adherence to international law, not drone strikes and indefinite detention.

Guantanamo

On January 22, 2009, President Barack Obama signed an executive order to shutdown the US prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The prison has entered its 13th year of operation on January 11, 2015. As of December 2014, 132 detainees remain at Guantanamo. As of December 2008, around 50-60 detainees have been cleared for release, but have not been released. CODEPINK continues to advocate for its closure and release of prisoners by attending Congressional hearings, holding yearly vigils and bird-dogging elected officials.  In May 2011, CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin disrupted the President’s counterterrorism address, criticizing his drone and Gitmo policies.

Take action to close Guantanamo!

Iraq

In 2014, CODEPINK called on Obama to Return his Nobel Peace Prize. CODEPINK activists gathered at the White House to protest military intervention in Syria and Iraq against ISIS and called on Obama to return his Nobel Peace Prize. Activists mourned those affected by war and called for nonviolent solutions to the conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

Syria

In 2013, CODEPINK successfully delivered a petition with over 3,000 signatures to the office of Ambassador Samantha Power’s, the US mission to the UN in New York. The petition urged Ambassador Power to push for a ceasefire for Syria during the Geneva II Convention.

CODEPINK and a coalition of women's groups launched Women Lead to Peace, a global alliance of women and male allies calling for an immediate ceasefire in Syria, an embargo on arms sales, greater humanitarian aid for the refugees and displaced, and the full participation of women at the peace negotiations. The group mobilized a physical presence in Geneva and Montreux from January 20-22, 2014 for a Women Lead to Peace Summit.

CODEPINK protested Congressional Syria hearing: See the press coverage. CODEPINK staunchly opposes the use of military force in Iraq and Syria which both results in civilian deaths and is environmentally damaging. Take action!

She also allowed torture to displace diplomacy as the hallmark of the US foreign policy. Demand an Iraq Inquiry

Thousands were killed in the US invasion of Iraq— civilians and soldiers.

President Barack Obama was elected on a platform of peace but never delivered on his promises to end the US military intervention in Iraq. Iraq is still in shambles, and Iraqis are still getting killed every day. The least President Obama can do before the end of his tenure is to establish an independent inquiry into the 2003 Iraq invasion, similar to the Chilcot Report.

It is the US, under the Bush administration, that is responsible for disseminating lies, spearheading the invasion, having no post-invasion plan and destroying Iraq. Since 2003, 500,000-1,000,000 Iraqis have been killed, millions more wounded and one in eight have been driven from their homes. Shouldn’t the American people know exactly who led us into the biggest foreign disaster in modern history? If the British people can demand accountability, why can’t we?

  • Appoint an independent investigation into the Iraq war: Investigating the Iraq war would be the first step towards holding US officials responsible. We need transparency and accountability more than ever to make sure the next US administration cannot get away with waging more illegal and immoral wars. Sign the petition to President Obama.
  • Peoples Tribunal on the Iraq war - November 2016 - Washington DC: The tribunal will take place after the election cycle. It will examine the violations of human rights and rights of the people of Iraq by providing witness testimony from US military personnel, journalists, human rights advocates, legal experts, writers, academics and others. The tribunal will educate and engage the public about the importance of President Obama appointing an independent investigation into the Iraq war before leaving office. Please contact us to list your organization as an endorser or fill out this form.
  • The Chilcot Report reveals the rise of ISIL: CODEPINK has partnered with MADRE to open two shelters in Iraq, for Yazidi women who have bravely escaped from sexual enslavement by ISIL. You can contribute to this much-needed work.
  • Names of the Iraq war dead: Nearly 500,000 Iraqis have been killed according to a 2013 survey; the study estimates 460,800 died between 2003 and 2011 as a direct or indirect result of the conflict. Over 4000 US military personnel died in the Iraq war.
  • Iraq war profiteering: Defense contractors sold billions in arms and military services and received billions from Congress. Companies profit from the growth of military spending in Iraq. Private and public firms received billions of US taxpayer money for government contracts. The Costs of War Project by the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University said the war in Iraq cost $1.7 trillion dollars.
